Oh, now I understand why it's an issue for you

I do know for MS Works that when you open a document that has been saved as Word, it "converts" it to MS Works. It's possible that OpenOffice does that, too, but I don't remember off the top of my head (it's been a while since I used it).

Thanks, Melissa, I forgot about the OpenOffice option. I tried it awhile back but since I have always have MS Office, I didn't really give it a fair test.

The MS Works solution is a possible but I think the formatting is at a very different level. Most of the time, my clients are trying to open one of my resumes in Works and wonder where all the formatting went to and why it looks totally different.

Hi Julie,

Totally agree with you about the need for a laptop! Definitely much more flexibility for job seekers.

I just wanted to give you a couple of free ideas for job seekers who may not have the money to purchase MS Word (especially after springing for a computer):

-Documents created on MS Works can be saved as MS Word documents. Instead of hitting the "Save" icon, you go under File/Save As, and a box pops up where you type the name of the document and then can select the format in a drop-down box labeled "Save As Type." Among the choices are .doc or .docx (Word 2007).

-OpenOffice is a freeware that can be downloaded from OpenOffice.org. It has the same capabilities of creating the document in their program, but you can save it as a Word document.

Hope this helps some job seekers save a few dollars!

True, but that makes you even more prepared when you do a job search. Many people do not have a computer at home or if they do, they don't know how to use it.
