The secret to success in job search

Success in job search is the goal of every job seeker. Let me say up front that you don’t have to work with a career professional to succeed in a job search.

However, you do have to work as hard as a career professional AND invest the same amount of time. You need to learn the continually changing career marketing strategies career professionals invested a lifetime in learning.

What happens when you call a career marketing professional?

Everyone responds differently.

Success for the immediate purchaser

These job seekers purchase while we are talking because they studied designresumes.com or researched me on LinkedIn or Facebook.

  • Know others who successfully worked with me in the past.
  • Understand the investment because they know it will pay off in the long run.

Cautious job seekers

Cautious if they are new to the job search or career change process. It can be hard to trust someone across the country or around the world. Virtual connections are new for some people. I understand the purchaser wants to be sure I am the real thing.

Research the delivery method

Clients who suite me best have an integral role in the process. I write client content while conducting an interview either in person or via Zoom with screen sharing. For some people, this is ideal. Other resume writers do a phone interview and create their documents, e-mail, and conduct a review and get back to them later.

Do-it-themselves.

The career industry provides many resources such as this blog and other career blogs written by top industry professionals.

  • You can find samples to give you ideas online. We as an industry contribute to the top resume and career marketing books in your favorite book store or library.
  • This strategy takes another kind of investment. You need to read the blogs, read the books, study the samples, and determine a strategy to fit you.

Listen to a few of my clients’ success stories!

They just hired me as their night manager.  I begin this Friday.  Thank you for all your assistance.  Without you I know I would never have gotten the position.  I’m excited & can’t wait to start! (Restaurant Management)

It’s quite funny that in a real crisis in Europe  both of us manage to find nice positions .. outside the country. better salaries … better positions! (2 clients – Director – Customer Relationship Management and Quality Assurance Manager – IT)

THANKS Julie.  Yes, so far I am liking the new job and it is a position that I was hoping for. I had better success getting interviews after you did my resume than I did prior to that. (Project Management – IT).

Thanks Julie for all your help.  Yes, I was offered the position and accepted. (Vice President of Learning – College and 5 years later this client became President of a different college system when she rehired me.)

A year or so ago  I was fired and came to you to do a resume for me, not only did you do an awesome resume but you gave me a glimmer of hope that all was not lost. It was so much more than just a resume to me. You have been an inspiration to me and I can never thank you enough! Recently I was hired at the hospital on the Rehab floor full time! With better pay and hours than I previously had at my old job, things really do happen for a reason!! (Registered Nurse – Healthcare)

More success testimonials are here.

Resumes are the tip of the iceberg and the beginning point of career marketing.

Today’s job search has so much more: social media networking such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. And then there are online applications: the constant increase of applications via job boards or corporate websites. As critical as those are because you do need to follow directions, you clearly also need to create connections via networking to the jobs or new positions you would really like to hold.

The secret to success in a job search?

Your investment! As I said above some people will choose to partner with a career professional like myself, but no matter what method they choose, the need for dynamic, cutting-edge resumes, career marketing materials, and job search strategies is the same. You can succeed on your own. It just takes your investment of time, study, and commitment.

If you are ready to get going, let’s talk.

Julie: I really like the one point you made about the importance of the job seeker’s investment in the process! Whether job seekers partner with a career professional or not, there is still a need for the individuals to: a) put in the work to remember the stories of success that make up their careers, and b) articulate the particular skills they have that make them especially qualified for a target position.

Once the career professional has that critical information, s/he can then run with it to really bring out the unique value proposition that clearly shows what a company can get from such qualified candidates.

Exactly! Thank you so much for stopping by Melissa! It is critical to articulate the stories and bolster them with clear accomplishments that will clarify their value to the hiring manager.
