Quit trying to take the easy way out in job search!

I start my days by checking out headlines flying by on TweetDeck. When I saw this tweet by Donna, the Avid Careerist, I had to follow and read her post.

Donna was reporting her conversation with a Director of Talent Acquisition and how he removed the Apply with Profile button from his site. You can read Donna’s full post here.

The point made was that too many were not completing their profiles on LinkedIn so when they applied, they didn’t apply with any value to the employer. I wrote about not completing your LinkedIn profiles in “Are you Really on Linkedin?”

Using the latest tool to help you in your job search is great. But like anything else, if you use it badly, you will not benefit. Taking shortcuts on your resume or LinkedIn profile or in job applications for that matter will result in you not getting the job, plain and simple!

Job search is all about Strategy

As I said yesterday, job search is all about strategy and when you short-change the quality of your career marketing materials (i.e. resume, cover letter, LinkedIn profile, Google+ profile, or online application), you are short-changing your potential to get a new job.

What Donna and other career professionals are telling you is that finding a job is serious business. This economy makes it even more serious. Before you submit an application, you need to have done your research to make sure it is a good fit for you. Don’t willy-nilly waste applications and then when you find that good fit, give them your best materials — not an empty profile that only has company name and position on it!

Not sure what I mean by complete? Look at my LinkedIn profile which has rewarded me with new resume and career marketing clients.

If you really want a new career or job, let’s get serious about it and quit trying to take the easy way out! Hitting the easy button doesn’t always get you the cash.
