Are you desperate, comfortable, or determined?

Who would have known it could last this long? Did you ever read the statistic that June 2009 was when the Great Recession troughed according to economists? Following that thought, we would have been on the upward swing ever since. But if you tell that to people whose companies are still downsizing and restructuring and shutting down in large numbers, they would laugh at you.

The way I see it, no matter what the economic conditions are like, you need to develop a plan and follow it. Too many people get either desperate or comfortable instead of determined.

When you are desperate

It is hard to make a positive move because fear is driving your decisions. Sometimes it is hard to make any move at all because we become paralyzed by that fear. You sit mulling your options and not seeing any of them. Or you get angry and are pulled into actions that you might not take if you didn’t feel desperate.

When you are comfortable

You often make poor choices because you always think it will be that way. The Great Recession caught many people off guard. Many people who were survivors of the Great Depression lived their lives with more caution because they had lived through very hard times. They understood principles that newer generations have forgotten. They learned how to save and not let their desires push them into debt. Newer generations who only experienced good times  in the past don’t know how to react.

When you are determined

Your actions and thinking will be in a strategic mode. You will temper your desires with logic because you see a bigger pattern and know that taking the right steps will get you to your goal. It may take longer to get there because of outside forces like the economy but the determination you have will help you ride out the storms.

Which would you rather be? Desperate, comfortable, or determined?
