Anyone else feel like the saying, “Older but wiser” is really true for you? I find that the older I get the more reflective I am on decisions I made in the past. Now I look at things I held back doing which would have benefited me and think, “Why didn’t I do this before?” and also ask myself, “what was I thinking?”
Example, I have now started using accountants both to make sure my accounting program is accurate and to file my taxes. In addition, I floundered with my lack of marketing knowledge for years until I took the leap and invested in an expert.
What are the results of my investments?
I can now confidently look at my finances and recognize trends while knowing they are accurate. And the marketing advice, well, last year’s revenues were 38.7% up from 2010 and 2010 had matched 2009 even with the loss of the contract income from the non-profits. In other words, in a down economy, my business is going in the right direction.
On the flip side, I now see other decisions like the large copiers and printers that I used to invest in to produce mainly the non-profits newsletters, fliers, and reports as a really poor investment and waste of my time, energy, and money. Poor vision! I could have outsourced the printing and saved myself time and trouble. It would have saved the leases and service contracts, toner and paper that ate away any profit from that segment of my business.
As a resume writer and career marketing strategist, I see people making decisions the same way I did at one time. They pay for things that will not in the long run help them and avoid the investment that they should make into their own future.
I hear people who think they should be changing positions or who are struggling to find a new position and they can’t figure out what they are doing wrong.
On the flip side, I know people who have worked with me or another career professional and are confidently marching into their future.
Are you holding back in the wrong area? Should you be looking at things differently? Is it time to hire an expert who can help you find the career destination you are seeking or perhaps use a career change to your advantage?

Thank you again, Gavin! It is a hard lesson to learn sometimes. When to invest and when to hold back.

Your ” lack of vision” post makes sense to me. Sometimes I could relate to the feeling of losing one’s priority especially in investing. I was taking my time since I already lose some of my investment in the previous years. I guess I’ll be able to study things more carefully before investing something. Thanks for the insights.

Thanks Ariana, we may view investing differently. I am not talking about investments into the stock market but rather the purchase of things or services that later are not so wise. Perhaps we are thinking the same thing though because no matter what it is, you need to think before you act and then move forward if you see the value in the total picture.
