The secret to leveraging accomplishments in your resume

Let me teach you the secret to leveraging accomplishments. The key element to differentiate you from the pack of other job seekers is your accomplishments.

As long as you list only duties on your resume to target the resume with specific accomplishments for your career goal, you wonder why no one calls you back.

What is the secret to leveraging accomplishments?

First, your accomplishments need to fit the target of your resume:

  • Big Data Analytics – Implemented Big Data analytics for leading-edge connected devices across geographies to enhance capability, capacity, and predictive performance.
  • IT Transformation – Built IT technology organization and technology infrastructure in Hong Kong from ground zero for a $2B utility business. Directed implementation of IT infrastructure, including data center, network, financial and operations software selection, security and disaster recovery. Brought operations to standards in a one-year time frame, a first of its kind project implemented in Asia.
  • Site Decommissioning – Directed development and execution of Change Control for site decommissioning for facilities, utilities, manufacturing, laboratory, and IT. Ensured data integrity, addressed closure of 272 Change Controls, and transferred 72 Change Controls. Led closure and transferred Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Program Management – Drove multiple cross-functional ERP releases with wing-to-wing ownership. Led diverse onshore and offshore 30+ member team, delivering $1MM total benefit to the business quarterly, on time and on budget.

Are your accomplishments quantifiable?

What does that mean? In the examples above, three use a percentage or number to illustrate the value of the accomplishment. Obviously, not every accomplishment is quantifiable. However, the way you are leveraging accomplishments showcases your value in your field.

For example, no numbers are stated in the example below but it gives you a clear sense of the value:

  • Created, implemented, and managed multiple new production and process improvement programs. EXAMPLE: A pneumatically-controlled conveyor system designed to reduce employee injuries allowed each employee to set conveyor system according to personal height requirements. Led to reduced shoulder injuries, improved safety record, and decreased OSHA incident rate.

By omitting accomplishments or making them mediocre or boring, you fail to capture your audience. The main reason for your resume is capturing the reader.

Professional resume writers preach accomplishments and key words for every client. It may seem like you have none. However, I never met a client I couldn’t find worthwhile and wonderful accomplishments.

We tend to forget about our accomplishments or diminish them especially as time goes on. To create a successful resume, keep tabs on your accomplishments, record them, and regularly update your resume to ensure you are always ready for your next gig!
