Technology Sunday: Is a tablet a toy?

Technology Sunday: Is a tablet a toy?Almost immediately when the first tablets came out, I wanted one. But I live by a budget and rarely justify toys in the budget and that was how I perceived tablets — like toys.

My eye was on a Google Nexus 7 when they first came out, the price was better than the iPad (better for the budget). I heard good things about it from people I respect.

Is a Tablet a toy?

But I still saw it as a toy. Toys in my world can be gifted to me, but as I said, I rarely buy them for myself.

When my husband, Bill, asked what I wanted for Christmas last year, I told him about the “toy.” We even looked at one at Sam’s Club. Bill is not into using technology but he knows how much I love all things connected to technology. Long story short, he bought me one for Christmas and gave it to me mid-December.

Maybe a tablet is for work

Not for me, I put that tablet to work pretty early. I write and read emails on it. I increased reading books dramatically, both fiction and nonfiction. Often I read fiction to relax. When a friend from church shared BookBub on Facebook, free and bargain books for Kindle, I added to my collection rapidly. I never buy fiction books so this was perfect. The free fiction and nonfiction are priced between 99¢ and $2.99.

In addition to reading and email, I update social networks (marketing and networking for me), check things out online, read other blogs, check the weather, and such things.

It syncs with my Google Calendar so I am always up-to-date when I add an appointment. It is easier to use than my smartphone for writing. I could write blog posts on it but I don’t yet.

In short, I don’t see it as a toy anymore. It is a tool and one I am happy to be able to use. I don’t see the Google Nexus 7 as a replacement for the laptop. I still need the larger keyboards and mouse to feel efficient but it definitely lets me leave my chair and still stay connected. Technology is here to stay, you have to figure out ways to make it work for you.

I like your approach Julie. I think technology can be a great enabler of service and connections. Can it be fun too? Of course. But a big distraction too. I don’t own a tablet but I am planning to replace my iPhone with the soon to be released Galaxy Note 3 for productivity reasons.

Hi Brent, It can be…as with your texting and driving series. As with all things, moderation is the key. I have seen the Notes, I think you will like it.

I will also add my favorite tech tool right now is my Google ChromeBook. Light as a tablet but will a full keyboard like a laptop. Great writing tool for $250.

Maybe another Christmas present… I will have to let Bill know…

    I’ll take technology presents.

I’ll keep that in mind for Christmas, Andy!
