How do I know my LinkedIn profile settings are right?

Your LinkedIn profile settings are sometimes it is hard to understand which one does what. You may assume that you are not being seen when you change some of the settings but that isn’t always the case.

Understanding your LinkedIn Profile settings

The privacy tab is key to most of the LinkedIn profile settings that matter. But they keep changing.

One of the new ones in 2019 is who can see my email address?

I recommend that you set it to “anyone on LinkedIn.”

For those people who are afraid of people getting a critical email address, select a new Gmail address used specifically for LinkedIn, job search, and make sure you check it frequently.

Your Public LinkedIn profile settings

Back in the beginning, the public LinkedIn profile settings were often ignored. However, as knowledge of how the public profile is used, it becomes an area that needs your attention.

To ensure your photo is visible to everyone, make sure it is set to public or you will show up as a gray box.

As I explored the settings while editing this post, I see that there have been more changes to the settings.

For example, there is now a setting for background photo. Many people don’t realize that the option for a background photo even exists but if you are really trying to emphasize your brand, this is critical. Now you can turn it on in your public profile settings.

Thanks, Maverick, it was a client question yesterday. She wondered if her profile could be seen by the public. I responded privately and the advice must have been spot on because she has an interview with the recruiter today. We just finished the resume and wrote the cover letter on Monday. I thought others might have the same question.
