How to win big with the word of mouth phenomenon

How to win big with the word of mouth phenomenonWord of mouth? Isn’t that a strange concept for a blog focused on resume writing and job search? Not really! The biggest misconception about job search today is that it is rests on ATS programs. For those of you wondering what is ATS, it stands for Applicant Tracking System. The reality is that even though ATS is a component of job search, it is not the end all.

More jobs are found with Word of Mouth

Just like a good product is often sold through referrals, finding your next job will be easier if you keep your ear to the ground and listen to opportunities as they arise.

While job boards will always be an asset to job seekers and specialized tools like Glassdoor help showcase the places you may want to work, you still need to keep listening for opportunities that are not advertised.

I’m not a golfer but you probably heard that more deals are made on golf courses than in board rooms. Listen for job opportunities on the golf course too. The scuttlebutt about what company is expanding and who is driving the next project may be a topic of conversation in the clubhouse or out on the course.

Listening is key to Word of Mouth opportunities

If you are a Chamber of Commerce member, perhaps attend some gatherings, you never know what you might hear. Participate in community events, again the next opportunity could be with the person standing or sitting next to you.

Pay attention and then take action. If you learn about an opportunity, this is the time to use your LinkedIn research tools to find out who you know. Not your first level connections, find out who your first level connections are connected to that connect to decision makers in the company. Throw away your introvert hat and do some digging. Then follow-up with a phone call!

Leverage LinkedIn and word of mouth to find those new opportunities that are not on the job boards and spend some time connecting with people beyond those ATS programs. Even when you apply online, use the opportunity to follow-up with an educated real life contact to someone who can help you win the job.
