I was reading an article about the Nokia CEO who ended his speech saying this “we didn’t do anything wrong, but somehow, we lost”. The context was the announcement of Nokia being acquired by Microsoft. The writer, Rahul Gupta, goes on to say that “their problem was that the world changed too fast. Their opponents were too powerful.”
He went on to say:
They missed out on learning, they missed out on changing, and thus they lost the opportunity at hand to make it big. Not only did they miss the opportunity to earn big money, they lost their chance of survival.
The message of this story is, if you don’t change, you shall be removed from the competition.
This happens all too often. Not just to companies but to people too. I work with many people who no longer have a role that they did well. A role they cherished with a company they loved. Maybe it was a merger acquisition, corporate restructuring, company shut down, or the products were outsourced.
