Welcome! I’m Julie Walraven, the Principal and owner of Design Resumes. I started Design Resumes 30+ years ago and launched this website and blog in 2010.

My Biography

Known as a passionate career professional with a depth of understanding in career marketing, online content development, and social media marketing and 30+ years as a professional résumé writer, my Design Resumes business and marketing expands far beyond my Central Wisconsin office. My clients and readers span the globe.


Being resilient and resourceful, I found ways to use my interactive résumé writing business model when working with people continents away. Using technologies such as Skype and WebEx, I share my screen. My interview-based business model works virtually to write resumes, LinkedIn Profiles, cover letters, executive bios, and more with the same level of interaction as when working with someone who is sitting across the desk.

Always teaching and coaching, I use interactive sessions to explain and demonstrate new job search strategies, methods, and even conduct interview coaching using role-play.


My blog at is continually increasing in readership. With 800+ posts on the site about job search, résumé writing, interviews, and other career issues, my content and résumé samples are viewed by up to 10,000 visitors each month. One of the topics that I write about regularly is attitude. From my experiences working with job seekers, I know that the challenge of keeping positive is critical to success in the job search. Attitude is one of the chief reasons people are not hired and is one of the top reasons for firing.


I also teach social media marketing strategies to both job seekers and entrepreneurs. You can find me on all of the most popular platforms: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+. Our global communications via Facebook and Twitter make it very easy to promote positive ideas but unfortunately negativity and just plain foolishness are just as easy to communicate rapidly.


Prior to my sole focus on career marketing, I partnered Design Resumes with non-profit management. I provided administrative, marketing, accounting, fundraising, event management, and crisis management services to several area non-profits on annual contracts. In December 2009, I ended my last contract with Wausau Whitewater to focus solely on the career industry and to expand market share and reach beyond Central Wisconsin.


I have been married to my husband, Bill, for thirty-four years. We have two sons and a German Shepherd named Buddy who is my office companion. We live in Wausau, Wisconsin.

In my free time, I enjoy reading, gardening, walking, and cooking, not necessarily in that order. I am a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, where I serve as Webmaster and currently on the Staff Parish Relations Committee.

How does the Design Resumes process work?

I write your resume using my highly interactive  and personalized live-writing process (for more details, click here), quiz you on your accomplishments, and teach the latest job search strategies to get you back to work quicker, make a career transition to a new role, or grab the internal promotion you want. Your resume is designed and formatted to fit your personality and goals. Using my unique Project Roadmap allows us to evaluate and discuss your preferences for your resume down to specific formatting strategies and determining which sections should be in your resume.

The interactive process creates an opportunity for us to discuss your specific needs. I meet with you multiple times depending on the size of your package. Our entry-level option, the Bronze package usually requires 4 to 5 of my 90-minute sessions to deliver the completed resume. As your career progresses, the length of time to write your resume expands with an executive level resume likely to take about 10 to 12 hours. While this may seem like a long time to work with me, the rewards are well worth it, see the success story below.
