How to break glass ceilings and be successful
While everyone is up in arms about glass ceilings, let me put in my two cents.
As a female business owner for 30+ years who chose to stay small, I know today there are limitless opportunities for those women with good ideas, great skills, and the willingness to execute.
In December 2009, I decided to expand my market and now I often work with clients outside of the US.
Back in 2000, when speaking to a class of 8th graders about my business, I told them I planned to go global someday.
It sounded silly then but today I routinely speak to clients in the UK, Canada, Belgium, and other countries. Not only do I work with people globally, they often stay friends and we message back and forth instantaneously with Facebook, sharing pictures and laughs.
I keep my company small because I like my independence and being able to give personalized service to my clients. But I know that I could grow if I wanted to grow.

I get frustrated with complaints. You want to be at the top?
Two paths:
- Demonstrate your value to an employer who will let you go to the top. If glass ceilings in one company blocks you from rising, find another one. You are never forced to stay where you cannot find success.
- If that doesn’t work and you really want to be successful, make your own way.
Glass ceilings only hold you back if you let them
I coached many women (and men) to consider the possibilities of owning their own business, which lets you break your own glass ceilings. If that is your goal, you can make your company as big as you want. If you want to only hire women, that is your right (or should be). Personally, I like a combination of men and women in my life. I think we bless each other with our differences.
Create your own destiny
You may think you can’t do it but you can do anything you want to if you want to badly enough. If you project a negative attitude, you will bring negativity to you. Self-fulfilling prophecy.
- Think there is no money? Peer funding, micro lending, and KickStarter are there along with new initiatives daily for innovative ways to find funding and angel investors.
- Wonder how you will market? Social media allows you to reach the world.
- Don’t know how to build a business? Myriads of resources are available just by asking Google.
Excuses and protests are easy. Taking action and using the tools to gain your own success is harder. Which will you choose?
