Top 10 Resume Tip #7 – Check your Contact Info
How do I reach you? If you are a job seeker, you need to make sure that the people you want to reach can find you. Your hiring manager may not be as desperate as the person in the image above. He may just pass your resume by if you aren’t easy to contact.
The contact information you need on your resume has changed along with technology. My advice? I suggest you make sure you have:
- Your physical address. Even in this day of cyber space, hiring managers still want to know that you have one. If you are posting your resume on job boards, you may want to omit the address but if you are emailing to a specific job posting by an employer, let them know where you live. If you are relocating, you can either select an address in their location or let them know in the cover letter that you have a strong desire to live in the area.
- Your cell phone number. At one point, cells were non-existent. At other times, your home phone was preferred. Now your cell phone, equipped with a well-composed voice mail message so hiring managers know you appreciate the call, should be standard on your resume. With so many job seekers, the hiring manager wants to talk with you during the day, not wait until you are home.
- Your e-mail address. Email may not be used as much as before but it is still a popular form of business communication. Make sure your email is your name if possible and leave out numbers. Use your middle initial or middle name if your name is too common. Gmail is a reliable form of e-mail, easily accessible from any computer, tablet, or smart phone, allowing you to respond during the day.
Those are my top three contact forms for resumes. If you are still omitting the e-mail, putting your home phone on the resume when you work all day, you may want to rethink. Never ever use a work phone, work cell phone, or work email on your resume. You may be job seeking much sooner than you want if you do.
