When you don't think you measure up
Measure up defined in one way means having the qualifications. Another meaning of measure up is being equal to someone. When we discuss the concept of measure up in terms of job search, most people are wondering if they can win over the competition.
Do I measure up? Am I good enough?
The battle of a resume writer is helping the job seeker define his or her qualifications in a way that will bring to light their accomplishments. Far too often, the resumes I get from new clients are filled with duties but nothing takes those duties and transforms them into value.
When you start with a duty-driven resume, there is a long road ahead to be able to beat the competition. The resume is the foundation of the job search because this is where the job seeker asks the important questions and then substantiates the answers. This foundation then provides the basis for LinkedIn, the cover letters, the interviews, and the rest of the job search.
Ask yourself
- What differentiates me from the competition?
- How do I stand out?
- What did I do that makes me an expert in my field?
- What do I understand better than the competition?
- Have I driven multiple mergers and acquisitions?
- What kinds of systems have I implemented?
- Have I transformed processes and thereby cut costs or improved efficiencies?
- Did I negotiate better terms for the contract?
- What knowledge base do I have that stands out over the competition?
The challenge you face isn’t so much whether you measure up but if you are able to demonstrate how you are the most qualified candidate and this takes you way beyond just measuring up!
