How to gain control of your job search
Why should you gain control of your job search? When you lose control of your job search, you feel frustrated and it is hard to move forward. Problem is many people never even try to have control of their job search much less gain control of it.
They drift along, hopeful that the right job will fall into their lap and when it doesn’t, blame everyone but themselves.
How do you gain control of your job search?
Be purposeful. Be confident. Don’t blast out online applications to every potential position that might fit your qualifications.
Write a targeted resume that reflects your value and differentiates you from the crowd. But even if you have a professional resume writer such as myself write your resume, don’t think that throwing that resume out to every position will solve your problem. I don’t expect my clients to hire me to rewrite their resume for each potential job opportunity but I do hope that in working with me they find the tips and secrets in how to easily transform the value-driven resume I wrote for them to hit new targets.
Read Job Descriptions
Job seekers fall into many categories. Some never read job descriptions and just blindly point and click. Unless you have exceptional qualifications or are at an entry point in your career or are targeting nebulous companies who will take anyone, you will rarely get a job with a point and click strategy. You need to read the job description and then figure out what you need to change to hit the target.
You will gain control of your job search if you consider yourself as the product that must be sold to the hiring manager. Don’t vaguely resemble the candidate they need. Fit the bill. Show them how you will solve their problems. Show them your successes in other roles and target your resume to meet their particular goal.
