The right time to look for a new job is when you feel like your old job isn’t working anymore.
If you feel unfulfilled or unchallenged in your current role, then it may be time to move on to a new position.
How will you know if it is the right time to look?
You won’t know for sure. You prepare for the opportunity by capturing your value in a resume.
Many people fail to keep the resume updated because they feel like it isn’t critical once they have landed in a new role.
They struggle to find the old resume but if they did, other than historical value, their old resume would be woefully inadequate because it didn’t reflect the value they contributed in their current role or perhaps other roles with the same company.
Tending to take life for granted, they plunge on with their work and don’t really think about contributions except maybe at that exact moment.
- But wait! Someone asked for their resume on Friday and they suddenly realize they are not ready.
- Their LinkedIn profile is either nonexistent or horribly incomplete so they don’t represent as a passive candidate.
What’s a passive candidate? That’s what recruiters are always looking to find. The person with the talents and savvy for the role they need to fill. The recruiter searches for keywords connecting them with the right person.
But they won’t find the person who didn’t think LinkedIn was important or was hiding because they were afraid that their current employer would be mad.
You never know when it is the right time
My point is that you don’t know the right time. But being ready all the time puts you in the driver’s seat. You call the shots.
