Take off the Invisibility Cloak

Are you wearing an invisbility cloak?

Not every job seeker puts on the invisibility cloak, but those who do suffer much longer job search periods. I recently wrote about my own disappearing act. The feedback and responses were amazing. It is so good to hear from so many former clients and friends. They also confirmed that I needed to reach out and keep in touch.

The problem with those invisibility cloaks

You might value your privacy and believe it doesn't matter, but if no one knows you’re available or seeking connections, they won’t consider contacting you. Your friends, colleagues, neighbors, and team members need to know you need their help.

I also believe in making it easy to contact you. On LinkedIn, people think that LinkedIn messages will help them reach others but there are at least three reasons that those don’t work well:

  1. There is a lag time from when you send the message to when the person gets an alert on the message.
  2. Many people never check their messages or find it annoying.
  3. They may not want to waste their InMail credits to find out what you need if you are not connected to them.

Your contact information on LinkedIn should include your phone number and email. I know people worry about spam but you will get it anyway.

Do you really want to miss a critical email from someone who could help you find your next job?

Drop Your Cloak of Concealment

Be visible, easy to contact, and continuously reach out to others. Keep them informed so they can help you when you need help.

Develop content so you can Stand out on LinkedIn and not be mired in the crowd. If your profile and the content you share all demonstrate your value, you will attract those you wish to reach. It won’t happen over night but no good thing does. Be consistent and you will reach those you need to reach.
