The grass is only greener where you water it

A client shared this statement that one of her college students put on the whiteboard recently:

The grass is only greener where you water it.

I found it to be very profound. We had been talking how the grass is not always greener when you change major things in your life, whether it is relationships or physical locations or jobs. You may think it would be greener just because it is different from what you have now but the reality is that the investment that you put into the new … or the old… is what will make it greener.

For change to work, you have to make changes yourself

If you change relationships but soon resume old habits, your new relationship will take on the boring parts of the old one. If you move to a new part of the state or country or even to another country, unless you bring a commitment to do things differently, the old things will take over.

This is why the grass is only greener where you water it

And thus it is with jobs too. You may feel like if you only were working over there or over here, it would be better. In reality if you don’t invest yourself in the process, you won’t end up with the excitement or challenges you looked forward to when you thought about making a move.

The best thing you can do when you are thinking about change is to outline what makes it better, think Pro-Con decision-making tool and then determine if you are committed to carry out a plan to keep it greener by investing (watering) in making it worthwhile.
