As I work with job seekers, I find that some of them are still stuck on the myths of job search taught in school by educators who didn’t expand their research beyond tired old business or English manuals.
Fortunately, my clients know that all they have to do is ask me and I will find them the best possible cutting-edge resources for any question they have and they know they can trust me to point them in the right direction.
Getting her mojo back
A client made me smile yesterday when she e-mailed that she felt she was “getting her mojo back” and asked for any resources I have for interviewing. I e-mailed her back that I recommend Susan Whitcomb’s book, Interview Magic as a good place to start.
Cornerstones of the career industry
There are people who are cornerstones of the career industry and Susan is one of them. Author of many of the career books on the market and pioneer in the career coaching industry, she is considered one of the leading authorities in the coaching industry. I’ve known Susan through e-lists for years and intersected with her online in many places. We’ve exchanged e-mails that showed our common ground.
This year, I met Susan in both Baltimore and New Orleans at the career industry conferences I went to. Susan was both a presenter and exhibitor at both of them. One of her latest projects is the Twitter Job Search Guide that she co-authored with Deb Dib and Chandlee Bryan.
I can confidently recommend these books by my colleagues as well as multiple other resume writing and career resources. Jist Works has been known as the career industry’s publisher for years and many of the best resources available have been published through Jist. You can check out some of the books my work has been featured in here.
Myths of the job search
It still amazes me when the best writers in the industry have written volumes on resumes and many of the industry professionals have works published in them that two things are still happening. Educators teach myths in the classroom – perhaps you have heard of the one page resume myth and or been given stale-dated formats that don’t demonstrate your value proposition or accomplishments in your resume.
Job seekers don’t seem to realize the wealth of information out there to keep them on track. Fortunately, I think the voice of the career industry is getting louder and instead of misinformation and resume mills mindsets, job seekers are finding that there are many dedicated professionals who want partner with the job seeker to take their career to the next level. Sometimes it is easy to think that the investment into career resources is too much but when the rest of your future is on the line, it might be a wise investment indeed.
At the very least, follow the best career professionals in the industry on Twitter. Here’s my career expert list.
