How to win friends and family at your holiday parties

Avoid these common communication fails at holiday parties

Your friends and family will appreciate you more at your holiday parties if you follow these simple tips.

Avoid these common communication fails at holiday parties

At Christmas dinner and office holiday parties, you often are connected with people who you don’t spend time with regularly. Or perhaps you just get nervous at more formal events, dinners, or parties.

  1. Don’t be the nonstop talker. This person misses social cues and carries on with his or her stories regardless of other people in the conversation.
  2. Remember to listen. Sometimes when you are nervous, you are thinking of the next thing you want to say and you don’t listen.
  3. Take the opportunity to speak to new people. By staying in your comfortable cliques, you may miss the opportunity to network with someone who could be a great connection.
  4. Don’t be the interrupter. When you are hurrying to tell your next story, you may be tempted to stop listening and interrupt the speaker. Don’t do it. If you can’t get a word in edgewise, wait your turn or find another group of people to speak with at the holiday party.

Maximize your networking opportunities

If you tend to be a wallflower, tell yourself you can be the one this year who provides value to others at gatherings. Be the listener, the helper, and the person who seeks out those people who might be uncomfortable at these gatherings too.

Merry Christmas! I wish you all happiness this holiday season!
