How to write a professional resume that won't sell you short
Despite the availability numerous resources on resume writing, many people still struggle with writing a marketable professional resume because they undervalue their potential and make light of their achievements. They sell themselves short because as they look back on their career and underrate what happened or depreciate their accomplishments.
Don’t sell yourself short in your professional resume
Many times as I start with a new client, they will say, “I don’t like to toot my own horn.” The professional resume needs to resonate with your value and experience so that hiring managers understand that you can do the job for them. While tooting your own horn may seem like bragging or boasting, what you really are doing in a professional resume is creating a word picture that captures what you have done and markets you for future opportunities.
When you downplay or pooh pooh your value, you diminish the possibility that a hiring manager will call you for an interview. Writing a professional resume on your own is hard work. You have to sift through your past and think back on things that happened five or ten years ago. You may tend to minimize the importance of your contributions or underestimate your role in what happened. As a professional resume writer, I work to find those hidden accomplishments and translate your value, strengths, and talents into a dynamic resume that showcases your proficiencies and skills to qualify you for the next role.
Your professional resume is the beginning of your marketing plan
When I work with you as my client, we market your resourcefulness, innovation, and creativity to position you as an outstanding candidate. At the same time, we look for industry-specific terms to make sure that we captivate the reader and motivate them to call you for an interview. During our conversations, I note any apprehension you may have about your job search and talk through strategies that position you for success.
Change is hard and looking for a new role always creates concerns. I don’t want your uneasiness to translate into inaction. Our goal together is to craft a marketing plan (which can include your resume, LinkedIn profile, interview coaching, and cover letters) that gives you the confidence and calmness to move forward in your career.
