Job search success, is it your resume? Not always!
Perhaps you worry you will never experience job search success.
You probably think I would say it is the resume. Sometimes, clearly the resume doesn’t resonate with the market because you don’t show skill sets for jobs you target. However, it isn’t always the resume.
Job search success stories
In recent weeks, my clients reported success stories: Vice Chair of Medicine | Chief of Hematology and Oncology, Executive Assistant – Healthcare Administration, Physician Assistant, and Sales & Service Manager.
Job search successes included Assistant Publisher, Operations Manager, Training Curriculum Manager, and a Technical Project Manager.
Certainly, every job search success story makes me happy! For some people, it can be a struggle to land the next job.
4 factors impeding your job search success
- Location – Do you live in a small community or remote area? If you change your target area, it can meet a move or a very long commute.
- Wrong job search strategy – If you only use the point n’ click strategy of applying to multiple positions, it will take longer. Without using your network (or creating a network) to find people who can get you to the hiring manager, the search can take longer.
- Your online identity – I’m not just talking about LinkedIn. If you use Facebook, Twitter, or Google+, your online identity can be counter-productive to your job search. . For some employers, endless photos of you with beer in your hand will be a turn off. Do you rant and rave about politics? Employers may have the opposite viewpoint. If you have an agenda, you may not be welcome.
- You never follow-up on applications you submit. Don’t wait for the posting date to end and it can be months away. Never assume that you shouldn’t call. You may be the one qualified candidate for the position but they want someone who is proactive.
If you struggle to find out what is stopping your job search success, examine these factors. See what you can do to make things go in the right direction.
