My 3 Words for 2020

For those of you unfamiliar with the “my three words” concept, it was started by Chris Brogan in 2006. I will let him explain:

What is My 3 Words About?

The My Three Words idea is simple. Choose 3 words (not 1, not 4) that will help guide your choices and actions day to day. Think of them as lighthouses. “Should I say yes to this project?” “Well, does this align with my three words?”

Why do My 3 Words matter?

Identifying a clear direction helps create focus. In my work with job seekers, one of the struggles is lack of focus. If selecting my 3 Words helps you focus, it helps you move forward.

My 3 Words in the past

I confess. I don’t do this every year. I think about it but put it off. I am fairly positive I wrote My 3 words posts in other years but these are the only two I found.

2019 – Faith. Focus. Declutter
2014 – Consistency. Follow-up. Focus.

My 3 Words for 2020

Coming up with my 3 words for 2020 was hard.

Focus

Yes. This has been consistent and in my prior words above. I admit I struggle with focus. It is so easy to get lured into other directions. This year my goal is to recircle to work on focus. Identify what I need to do and focus on doing it. Avoid distractions. Today’s social media world both distracts and depresses. If you focus on what you need to do and ignore the rest, you will accomplish more.

Write

This wasn’t hard to choose. I love to write but in recent years, I cut down on writing. By returning to writing more, the benefit is that I also return to what made me happiest. How this will manifest is yet to come but I do plan to write more in 2020.

Follow-up

In job search and entrepreneurship as well as life in general, follow-up is key. In 2020, with follow-up as one of my 3 words, I want to make it happen.

What are your “My 3 Words?”

A practice of contemplation will help you move forward.

My friend, Joe Jacobi, owner of 5 with Joe Performance Coaching shares his three words in the title of this article: Both. Start. Here.

After this was published, I just discovered that my business advisor, friend, and web developer, Raul Colon also wrote his My 3 Words. I won’t spoil it for you.  You can find it here. But I will tell you that I am delighted to have Raul, his wife, Lucilla, and the rest of his team as part of my team as I go forward into 2020.
