3 reasons to use only personal email address on LinkedIn
Why personal email address? Professional resume writers and career marketing professionals recommend that you never put your professional or company email or company phone number on your resume.
I agree, but let’s take that one step further. Unless you own your own business (like I do), the email address on your LinkedIn profile should be a personal email address you can access at any time whether or not you work for the company.
Why should you use a personal email address on LinkedIn?
- Companies monitor computer activity and emails much more regularly today. If you are using the professional email address from your company as your LinkedIn address, they could monitor any communication from your network or you on a regular basis.
- If you only use the company email on your LinkedIn profile, in the event of restructuring or sudden termination, you may find yourself locked out of your email address. As a result, you could be locked out of your LinkedIn profile and your network.
- Related to reason #1, if headhunters or recruiters find your profile interesting, they are likely to use your email to communicate, do you want your company to know you are being recruited?
Should you have more than one LinkedIn account?
No, your LinkedIn profile is all about you. Unlike your resume, which can and should be recreated when you target different companies, do not set up multiple LinkedIn profiles or build multiple networks.
Your LinkedIn profile should match your brand. You need a presence outside of LinkedIn for your entrepreneurial interests and you can provide a link to that website on LinkedIn if you like but don’t create two profiles. Rather, create a LinkedIn page for your company.
